A Chance To Die
Assignment due, Friday, June 8th, 5 pm
What is the "setting" for A Chance to Die? The place? The time period? Tell a little about Amy's childhood, her upbringing, and early influences.
Does anything in particular stand out to you regarding Amy's earlier years?
Evidence Not Seen
Assignment due, Monday, June 4th, by 5 pm.
What part of the story had a particular impact on you? Please summarize the incident and then tell how and why it effected you. I would anticipate 500 to 750 words.
In addition to being a very moving testimony of sacrifice
and - yes, even praise - in the midst of great suffering, Evidence Not Seen is
also a geography lesson, as well as a “slice of history”. So don’t just skip over the setting! It is a remarkable
opportunity to learn quite a bit about a dark, but fascinating place and time
in history.
Assignment due Friday, May 25th by 5 pm.
The
Setting
1. When does the story begin to take place? What year does Darlene arrive in Java? How
long had she been married to Russell at that time? How old is Darlene?
2. Why
have Mr. and Mrs. Deibler come to Indonesia?
Geography
2. It
would be nearly impossible to fully grasp the setting without looking at a map
while reading this book (unless you happen to be an Indonesian expert…? :).
Look up Indonesia on a good map and identify the major spots mentioned in the
story. http://www.nationsonline.org/maps/indonesia_admin_map.jpg
Find Celebes and New Guinea on a globe, so you can see where it
is in relation to the rest of the world.
History
3. Not too
long after Mr. and Mrs. Deibler began their missionary work, what dreadful
historical event took place? What powerful nations were involved by the end of
1942? Why is Indonesia involved in this World War? Read the following Wikipedia
article (both interesting and helpful!) to better understand the background: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_occupation_of_Indonesia
ASSIGNMENT FOR CHAPTERS I - X (due Friday, April 27, 5:00 pm)
Questions with Written Answers:
- Where is Ecuador? Locate it on a map. Do a little research and write down several significant statistics about the country.
- Where was Jim Elliot originally from? And Peter Fleming?
- What is Jim's early description of "Betty" (we know her as Elisabeth Elliot now)? (p. 17)
- What is "chicha" and what role does it play in the Indians' lives? (p. 42)
- Write the name and describe each of the five men. Include major details such as his wife's name, if he had children, and his background and gifts.
1. Ed was asked to help with the disaster of the flooding of the Shandia station. His wife, Marilou, (caring for their 8 month old in the jungle) responded with, "Oh, we'll be fine. We'll just stay right here, and you let us know by radio whatever you plan to do. I'm sure it'll work out okay." As usual, Ed was cheered by her spirit and began making preparations for the trip. "Elliot," he had said one day to Jim, "I've married an efficient wife. She plans-and she makes me plan. And we get it done!"
Can you imagine yourself in this situation? What kind of respond do you think you might have had in the same place (be honest now! :)? What qualities made Marilou such a blessed helpmeet to Ed?
